Our journey towards
providing comprehensive brain, spine and mind
care began in 1965, when Prof. Krishnamoorthy
Srinivas our founder returned from Canada
and the UK after eight years of intensive training
with the best neurologists and neuroscientists
at the time.
As a well qualified and trained professional
with a double MRCP (soon to acquire DM in Neurology,
the first in the country and later be elected
the youngest FRCP of 3 Royal Colleges), he established
his clinical practice in the Mylapore area.
Mylapore has for long been the home of Chennai
intelligentsia and traditionally boasts a well
read and aware population with contemporary
expectations.
Serving in this environment,
it was not long before he recognized the differing
neurological requirements of the community from
what hospitals and institutes were delivering.
He intelligently perceived the felt need at
community level for rehabilitation services
that were of a high quality yet easily accessible,
humane and responsive to patient needs. He could
see even then that neurological and psychiatric
disorders were closely allied with each other;
were often a reflection of underlying emotional
stress; and needed comprehensive care that went
beyond drugs and prescriptions. Thus was born
his vision of a community based comprehensive
clinical service that tackled neurological disorders
through physical and psychological therapy.
Over four decades
our founder has grown in stature to become one
of India's (even the world's) most celebrated
neurologists. He is the recipient of many awards,
honors and distinctions; most significant of
these perhaps being the dual distinction of
Honorary Membership of the American Neurological
Association (2003) and American Academy of Neurology
(2004), the first Indian to be so honored. He
has as professor at the Madras Institute of
Neurology- Madras Medical College taught legions
of students (Neurology, Psychiatry, General
Medicine and allied specialties) and continue
to teach and mentor several even today. He has
through his own philanthropy of time and sense
of social responsibility; and through the philanthropy
of friends, well-wishers, patients and corporate
houses; developed community neurology departments
of excellence at the Voluntary Health Services
Hospital (Taramani, Chennai- 600113) and Public
Health Centre (West Mambalam, Chennai- 600033).
He has also developed through his mentorship,
sharing of knowledge and training a team of
professionals who specialize in the provision
of comprehensive brain, spine and mind care.
His inspiration and
mentorship encouraged his son and our Director
and Senior Consultant Prof. ES Krishnamoorthy
to enter the world of medicine and to subsequently
train in Psychiatry acquiring the MD at the
prestigious Manipal Group of institutions. He
then was awarded the Paul Hamlyn Fellowship
for the Diploma in Clinical Neurology and subsequent
Neuropsychiatry training at the prestigious
Institute of Neurology and National Hospital
for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen Square,
London, a world class centre of excellence.
A year long stint as resident in Neurology at
the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Newcastle General
Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne followed. Prof.
ES Krishnamoorthy was then awarded in competition
the Raymond Way Fellowship in Behavioral Neurology
under the tutelage of Prof. Michael Trimble
at the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square.
In this position (equivalent to Lecturer and
Senior Registrar) he managed in-patient and
out-patient services in epilepsy, Tourette's
syndrome and neuropsychiatry apart from carrying
our world-class research in these areas. A brief
leadership stint establishing an Epidemiology
and Clinical Research Unit at the National Neuroscience
Institute, Singapore followed, after which he
returned to India as the first comprehensively
trained "Behavioral Neurologist, Neuropsychiatrist
& Clinical Neuroscientist".
Following his return
Chennai in 2002, our services have witnessed
considerable augmentation and development in
response to societal changes and needs. We moved
to a central and permanent location that combines
aesthetic appeal with comfort and pragmatism.
We have grown in scope to offer a wide variety
of investigations and treatments under one roof.
We have a comprehensive neurophysiology laboratory
and offer comprehensive neurological and psychiatric
assessments and treatment services. Our service
now includes a range of physical therapies (Transcutaneous
Electrical Nerve Stimulation, Interferential
Therapy, Ultrasound, Short Wave Diathermy etc.)
that aim to improve physical and occupational
functioning and reduce disability. We also offer
a very wide range of psychological therapies
(Jacobson's Progressive Muscular Relaxation
techniques, counseling, cognitive behavior therapy
(CBT), cognitive retraining therapy (CRT), cognitive
analytical models of therapy, short term psychodynamic
therapy and a range of counseling services targeting
schoolchildren, adolescents & young adults,
couples and families, martial and sexual counseling
etc. We have developed a range of programs that
address the needs of the confused career aspirant,
the busy professional with physical and emotional
stress, children with special needs (emotional,
behavioral and physical), adolescents, adults
and elderly.
Indeed, we now
are a unique model of community based comprehensive
neuropsychiatric care, with no parallels in
India and few parallels internationally, working
as a team to improve the quality, of life both
for the patient and the family.
