Conceptual Overview

Neuropsychiatry is the queen among medical specialties, straddle as it does the interface between the brain & mind. Trained personally by one of the world's pioneers Professor Michael Trimble MD, FRCP, FRCPsych at the prestigious Institute of Neurology (University College London) and the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery at Queen Square, London, from 1995 to 2000, Prof. (Dr.) Ennapadam S Krishnamoorthy (ESK) is the first person in south India to have acquired full fellowship training in this field and its sister specialty Behavioral Neurology. Having served in major academic leadership positions, Chairman of the International League Against Epilepsy- Commission on Neuropsychiatric Aspects and Executive Committee Member and Newsletter Editor of the International Neuropsychiatry Association, ESK is widely regarded as a world leader in this field, and a pioneer of Neuropsychiatry in India. Secretary-General of the International Neuropsychiatry Association- India Chapter (INA-India) and Organizing Chairman of the forthcoming Eighth International Congress of Neuropsychiatry (September 2011 in Chennai, India), he has established a dynamic grouping of multidisciplinary professionals in the specialty. ESK has also launched the first interdisciplinary PhD program in Neuropsychiatry in India at the TS Srinivasan Centre, The Institute of Neurological Sciences- VHS Hospital under the aegis of TN Dr. MGR Medical University and revolutionized the practice of neuropsychiatry having developed, tested and launched a multi-disciplinary model of neuropsychiatry practice to international acclaim.

Multidisciplinary Clinical Care Models

The Neuropsychiatry Group, a conglomerate of multidisciplinary professionals, is a unique practice model, one that has been honed to perfection by its founder ESK. With the accomplished physician at the lead of all medical interactions, the group consists of physical and occupational therapists, psychological therapists, nutritional therapists, alternative physicians and physician assistants, nurses and technicians; all well trained in their respective fields of expertise. In addition to this grouping that functions across the lifespan, the Neuropsychiatry Group has special professional teams that address special populations: children, the adult with brain or mind disability; and the older person; a unique interactional model of The Neuropsychiatry Group.

The Neuropsychiatry Group also has a unique, process driven, workflow model: one that addresses a person with problems of the brain, mind and spine comprehensively, arriving at a diagnostic formulation that permits integrative care and rehabilitation. This workflow and process model, considered widely as a best clinical practice model, has been presented at international forums in Oxford (British Epilepsy Association) and Kyoto (International Neuropsychiatry Association) and has been published in international scientific journals of repute (for example Krishnamoorthy ES & Gilliam F. Best clinical and research practice in adult epileptology. Epilepsy & Behavior 2009). The figure below illustrates this unique workflow model adopted by The Neuropsychiatry Group in all service locations.

The Lifespan Perspective

Unique about The Neuropsychiatry Group is its approach to problems of the brain, spine and mind across the lifespan. This approach integrates skills and talent required for the specialty as a whole, whatever the age of the affected person, with differential skills necessary for disorders that occur during specific life periods.

The Growing Brains LAB - with TEJAS Healthcare Solutions www.tejashealth.com

Disorders of brain and nervous system development are among the most disabling disorders that affect young children and their families. These include several forms of mental retardation and learning disability, cerebral palsy, dyslexia, autism, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder and a spectrum of emotional and behavioral disorders including those due to family and school stress. Children with these disorders need the care and attention of a multi-disciplinary team such as ours, including the neuropsychiatrist, physical, occupational and speech therapists, psychologists with special training and interest in education and development, special educators, social workers, speech therapists and nurses. We offer comprehensive care and therapy to children with these disorders and their families. We liaise with schools (both mainstream and special schools), engage in advocacy for these children and consistently work towards encouraging and enhancing their development. We also liaise with the family and work towards building a cohesive family environment in order to ensure for these children the best possible outcome.

Adolescents and young adults often find themselves at the crossroads of academic and career development. Not being sure about one's future direction is the greatest source of stress for most young people and results in neurological, psychological and sometimes psychiatric symptoms. We use a scientific approach to assess in each individual's brain dominance, lobar functions, intellectual ability, inherent strengths and weaknesses, personality profiles, aptitudes, aspirations and expectations and use this information to provide a comprehensive and customized template, helping the person arrive at a rational and informed choice.

GRACE - with TEJAS Healthcare Solutions www.tejashealth.com

Neurodegenerative disorders such as stroke, dementia, Parkinson's disease, peripheral neuropathy, states of confusion, disorientation and memory loss, and depression head the list of disabling conditions that increasingly affect people as they age. Other conditions that cause considerable brain and mind disability are epilepsy, head injury, spine injury, neuromuscular and other disabling illnesses. We offer a comprehensive multidisciplinary service for the elderly and adults with disability. We begin with a comprehensive assessment by members of our team during which we assess the illness, quantify the level and range of disability and support available. Based on these results, we build for each individual a treatment program that decreases symptoms, improves physical and psychological functioning, and provides a better quality of life. Very often, neuropsychiatric illness in the elderly impacts on the entire family environment, as a range of memory, behavior, dependence and interactional issues are involved. Our team cares for the family and aims to restore normal family functioning. A home care service for the elderly and disabled is also on the anvil as are rehabilitation, step-down and palliative care services.
